About Silver Nanowires and Its Application

Nanowires are defined as a one-dimensional structure that is limited to less than 100 nanometers in the transverse direction (there is no restriction in the longitudinal direction). Nanowires can be divided into different types depending on their material, and silver nanowires are one of them. In addition to the excellent electrical conductivity, silver nanowires also have excellent light transmittance and flexural resistance due to the size effect at the nanoscale. Therefore, it is regarded as the most likely material to replace the traditional ITO transparent electrode, making realization of being flexible, bendable LED display, touch screen become possible.

The market survey data shows that buyers of silver nanowires are mainly divided into two types: university research institutes and technology manufacturing companies. Most of them buy this product for the following applications:

1. Silver nanowires for Conductive ink

With the development of science and technology, conductive ink made of silver nanowire powder plays an extremely important role in the printing circuit. It is a paste ink made of conductive materials dispersed in the bonding material. Nanoparticles-based conductive ink has higher conductivity and can be used for printing conductive points or conductive lines. At present, the whole conductive ink market is expected to grow to 4.5 billion US dollars in 2033, with broad market prospects.

2.  silver nanowires for Transparent electrode

Transparent electrode plays an important role in modern electronic equipment. Transparent electrodes made of silver nanowires have been gradually recognized as materials that are easy to improve performance due to their excellent electrical conductivity and flexibility. Silver nanowires are widely used in the field of sensors because of their good heat transfer, electrical conductivity, biocompatibility and antibacterial properties, so transparent electrodes can be used in different types of sensors. The main material for making transparent electrodes is ITO. However, as indium becomes increasingly scarce and its cost rises rapidly, silver nanowires have attracted more attention and are expected to become a substitute for ITO.

3.  silver nanowires for Flexible material

Flexible materials refer to something with certain softness and flexibility. Now flexible materials generally refer to the one applied in wearable materials. The conductive film is made by crosslinking nano silver wire with appropriate organic material on flexible substrate, which has better light transmittance, electrical conductivity and flexibility. It can be used in flexible touch screen, flexible OLED, solar cell and other aspects.

4. Research and development

In addition to the existing research findings, many universities and institutes at home and abroad continue to conduct a series of studies on silver nanowires particles, trying to discover more possibilities on them.

Recently, a research team led by Professor Ji Shulin of the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed a new transparent heating film made of silver nanowires that can be used to manufacture paper-based silver nanowire film heaters. Rapid temperature changes can be achieved at the low voltage of the microcell. It is combined with different color changing temperature and color changing direction of thermochromic ink, to achieve intelligent anti-counterfeiting color changing effect. This intelligent color-changing technology breaks the limits of electrochromic, photochromic, hydrochromic and pressure sensitive color-changing technologies. It is expected to be used in anti-counterfeiting, security, intelligent display and other fields in the future.
