This effectively reduces heat release rate and restrains molten dripping, mitigating the disadvantage of HDPE, which is flammable and prone to flowing combustion.

HDPE itself is highly flammable, melt drips, and continuously releases flammable small molecules. Simply adding MWCNT cannot achieve self extinguishing (UL94 grade is difficult to improve), but it can significantly reduce combustion intensity, suppress melt droplets, and reduce heat release. It belongs to nano synergistic flame retardant and is not the main flame retardant.
Flame retardant mechanism (mainly condensed phase)
1. Build a continuous carbon network and support a dense carbon layer (core)
During combustion, MWCNTs migrate to the surface of the material, forming a rigid tubular skeleton; Catalytic carbonization of HDPE pyrolysis products to generate a continuous and non cracking carbon barrier.
Isolate external oxygen, block the outward diffusion of internal flammable volatiles, and at the same time, block the inward conduction of heat, slowing down the continuous decomposition of the substrate.
2. Free radical capture (secondary)
MWCNT surface defect sites capture combustion chain reactions · OH and alkyl radicals, weakening the combustion reaction rate.
3. Suppress melt dripping (a significant advantage of pipes)
Pure HDPE burns and flows a large number of molten droplets, which are highly prone to igniting the surrounding area; MWCNT three-dimensional network enhances melt strength and significantly reduces the risk of droplet diffusion during ignition.
Reference addition amount (extruded pipe system)
-0.5-2 wt%: threshold range
Reaching the percolation network, PHRR (peak heat release rate) significantly decreases; Balancing processing fluidity and mechanical properties.
-3-5 wt%: flame retardant effect further improved
But the viscosity of the melt increased significantly, and the extrusion pressure of HDPE pipes soared; MWCNTs are prone to agglomeration, resulting in decreased impact and elongation; The material turns black and permanently conducts electricity.
