Nano tungsten oxide application prospect

Nano tungsten oxide WO3 is a good catalyst with large SSA and significant surface effect. It can be used as both main catalyst and co-catalyst, and has high selectivity to the reaction.

Nano WO3 has a strong ability to absorb electromagnetic waves and can be used as an excellent solar absorption material and recessive material.


WO3 is an n-type semiconductor material with excellent gas sensitivity, so it can be used to make gas sensor and gas chromic device.
1) In terms of environmental testing. Used for flammable gas leak alarm and humidity sensor. The measured gas mainly includes CO,CH4, NOx,SO2,NH3,H2 and so on.
2) Civil use. It can detect the leakage of civil gas such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and city gas. It can also detect some foul smelling gas in public places such as houses and buildings.

3) Industrial. 

Used for the detection of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and other highly toxic gases in petrochemical industry; 

Detect the hydrogen produced in the process of power transformer oil deterioration; 

Testing the freshness of perishable foods such as meat; 

Detect the concentration of ethanol gas in the driver's breath.


In recent years, through the joint efforts of many researchers, different degrees of progress have been made in improving the gas sensitivity and selectivity of WO3-based gas sensitive materials, reducing the working temperature, conducting different doping and improving the process.


The band gap energy of tungsten trioxide is about 2.5eV, and it has potential photocatalytic ability in visible light with wavelength <500nm. Photocatalytic degradation of organic matter is a new technology, which uses sunlight to degrade organic matter, saves energy and does not pollute the environment.

Therefore, WO3 has a potential application prospect in the treatment of organic dye contaminated water.
