Thermochromism refers to the phenomenon where a material undergoes color changes under temperature changes. This change is usually caused by changes in the electronic or molecular structure of the material. Its application principle mainly involves t...

Materials For Flexible Chemical Sensors-Carbon Nanotubes

  • October 17,2014.
The discovery of carbon nanotubes by Iijima in 1991 opened up a brand new era in materials science and nanotechnology. The intrinsic electronic propeties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are such that they may be metallic or semiconductive depending on their diameter and the graphitic ring arrangement around the tube wall. Furthermore, Carbon nanotubes show exceptionally good thermal and mechanical properties. It is expected that carbon nanotubes could solve the thermal disspation problem of nanodevices due to their high thermal conductivity.
Carbon nanotubes can transport a significant amount of electric current without
the doping problem encountered in silicon based field-effect transistors because of their graphitic nature and because the covalent bonds among carbon atoms are much stronger.
Carbon nanotubes are among the most promising materials anticipated to impact future nanotechnology owing to their unique structural and electronic properties, which have generated great interest for applcation in a broad range of potential nanodevices. Around 2000,indivifual single-walled carbon nanotubes were recognized as being extrenely sensitive chemical sensors toward NO2, NH3 and O2. The highest mobility at room temperature reaches 104 cm/2V.s. The combined mechanical strength, semiconductor electrical propeties with very high mobility, and extremely high chemical sensitivity of SWNTs have led to the study of their use in flexible chemical sensors.
