Nickel metal with high hardness, good toughness, ferromagnetism, excellent performance, and often as a second phase doping in other metals or non-metals. Therefore, the study of carbon nanotubes plated with nickel also aroused great interest the majority of researchers.

Since the non-metallic nanotubes belong, having no chemical catalytic activity, and the surface activation energy is high, is difficult to be wetted nickel, iron, cobalt and other metals or compounds, therefore, want to get good adhesion, uniform coating, must activation treatment of the carbon nanotubes, so as to have catalytic activity. Commonly used methods are sensitized activation - activation method, colloidal palladium activation method, and no palladium activation method.
