Scientists have come up with the concept of a Smart Window, a window that regulates the amount of heat and light entering a building. Smart window is an optical device composed of substrate (glass or other transparent materials, etc.) and dimming material. It can be colored or faded in some sections of the solar spectrum under certain physical and chemical factors, such as illumination, electromagnetic irradiation, electric field, gas, temperature and so on, causing the optical characteristics of dimming material to change. Thus the spectrum selectively absorbs or reflects solar radiation, to shield ultraviolet light, adjust the intensity of indoor sunlight and indoor and outdoor heat delivery, reduce cooling and heating energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

According to the different excitation methods, Smart Windows can be divided into three categories: thermochromic, gas-chromic and electrochromic. Among them, electrochromic and thermochromic Smart Windows are the hot topics of current research. In comparison, thermochromic Smart Windows have the advantages of simple structure, no energy consumption, automatic sensing of the change of ambient temperature and dynamic adjustment of light transmittance. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is the most widely studied inorganic thermochromic material. Vanadium dioxide thermochromic Smart window can absorb more than 90% of ultraviolet light (if UV absorber is added, the absorption rate can reach 99%), without affecting the transmittance of visible light, according to the change of external temperature, adjust the transmittance of infrared part of sunlight.

Based on this application, the key problem is how to make the phase transition temperature close to room temperature, which is generally reduced by doping method. Doping method is the main means to reduce the temperature of VO2 phase transition. The principle is to replace vanadium ion or oxygen ion with doping ion to destroy the isopolar binding between vanadium ion. Due to the reduction of the isopolar binding of vanadium particles, the phase transition of VO2 semiconductor is active, resulting in the decrease of the transition temperature of semiconductor-metal state.
